I loved the idea of having the home birth of our child documented in a tasteful way. I really wanted to be able to achieve this but thought it would be a challenge as it meant having a stranger there in our birthing environment with us. It also meant having to capture some images in a very dark cottage in low lighting. After meeting with Nat and chatting it all through with her. I felt confident to just go for it. She reassured me that it wouldn't be like being at a photo shoot and that she would be Invisible as possible in my birthing space. We talked through where my comfort zone was and I was extremely trusting of Natalie's ability to respect them as well as confident in her ability to do a great job at the same time.... ....Natalie was able to get some beautiful images that really capture the mood of our labour. Birth Photography
Some people think I am weird for wanting to photograph a birth but I think birth is fascinating! Giving birth changed me as a person, hands down. It was the most profound, emotive and hardest thing I have ever achieved. I felt so proud of myself. I had brought a life into the world and I would never be the same person ever again.
Birth Photography is becoming very popular now as people want to remember this incredibly exciting journey. As a Mum in Labour you often struggle to remember it, its all a bit of a blur and Birthing Partners are often tied up rubbing backs etc. to capture the story that I am so lucky to document.
Of course births hardly ever go to 'plan' but I find this exciting. It is such a beautifully intimate time between a couple or a family where nothing else matters apart from being there and supporting a birthing Mother through it.
Before I shoot a birth I will get to know the family, we will discuss what they are expecting from the photos and what they are happy with.
On the day of the birth I basically try to become INVISIBLE! I am not involved in anyway, i am simply there to document their birthing story. If at any time you would like me to leave that is cool with me.
If a birth plan switches to an unplanned C section I am happy to wait until after delivery to capture photos of the precious 'golden hour' where parents bond with their newborn skin-on-skin.
All birth photos will remain 100% private and will never be published on my website, social media or elsewhere unless you would like me to as these Parents have.
